The brachial plexus is a network of intertwined nerves which originate from the neck region and control movement and sensation in the arm and hand. These nerves are situation in the shoulder region and a traumatic injury in the region can damage these nerves which may result in the weakness of the muscles, loss of sensation or loss of movement in the arm.
Most of the Brachial Plexus injuries are caused by road accidents specially to those on the motorbikes, knife or gunshot wounds and sometimes due to strong impact in a physical sport like rugby, soccer or basketball. Falling on the shoulder due to any reason can also result in this injury.
Contrast CT Scan of the Cervical Region covering the shoulder is considered as the best test for diagnosing brachial plexus injury. Ideally this test should be done 3-4 weeks after the injury. MRI of the Brachial Plexus Nerves is also a very good test to correctly diagnose the injury and its extent.
A lot of Brachial Plexus injuries heal on their own without any medication or surgery over a period of 4-5 months.O Our physiotherapists monitor the progress on a regular basis and make sure that further damage is not done due to lack of movement. They would prescribe the permitted movements of the arm which would help in faster recovery.
Brachial Plexus Surgery is one of the most complex surgeries which the neurosurgeons or the orthosurgeons perform. The surgery is long lasting from 3-7 hours and the results are not always great. This is the reason that many of the neurosurgeons do not perform this surgery. The results also depend on the severity of the injury and full movement or strength may not return.
The recovery period after surgery is often long, and requires a strong commitment to a comprehensive rehabilitation program to restore physical abilities. Our physiotherapists will be with you during your recovery period if you stick to the rehab programme laid down for you without giving it a miss.
